Our 2nd Annual Fundraising Event for Universal Dementia Caregivers (UDC)
As a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing caregivers, families and communities supporting love ones with Alzheimer’s and other dementia related diseases through education and training, UDC strives to offer real benefits to caregivers especially those in need-based communities. We want to be a trusted resource helping caregivers manage the social, spiritual, emotional and practical needs of those suffering with the disease. It is our goal to empower caregivers with the skills and techniques to honor and support those they serve living with dementia related diseases, while caring for themselves. Caregivers have been found to be under great emotional stress, many suffering from depression and often failing to take care of their personal care needs. We offer a positive person centered learning experience that provides caregivers with a safe place to share their challenges, struggles and excitements. Universal Dementia was founded in 2014 by Dr. Paula Duren, a psychologist, after caring for her parents who died from dementia related diseases. In 2018, UDC trained over 1000 caregivers. In addition, we offer workshops, job aids, family coaching/mediation, and speaking engagements/presentations.
We chose to have a dance theme because dance impacts the entire body for both the love one and caregivers. Research suggest that dancing can:Reduce dementia related agitation; Connect with memories even though dementia often blocks recent memories (music); Improve gait and coordination while walking; Boost cognitive performance; Improve social interactions; Reduce or slow the onset of dementia; and improve the mood of caregivers.
